Home About Michaëla Chevalier

Twirling while learning to walk, Michaëla began taking ballet and jazz classes at age four.  As a child she watched musicals, quickly fell in love with the dancing of Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire and so naturally came a yearning to learn Ballroom Dancing.  As a teenager she sought ballroom dancing lessons wherever she could find them.

Michaëla went to undergraduate school at the University of Oregon where she studied Physics and joined a Ballroom Dance team that focused on performing and competition.  As her skills developed, her coach had her help train the new team members.  In her senior year at the University, Michaëla took on the job of Public Relations Coordinator at the Eugene branch of USABDA (United States Amateur Ballroom Dancers’ Association, now known as USA Dance), she also was a DJ for their monthly dances.

After undergraduate school, Michaëla worked as an instructor at Fred Astaire Dance Studio in Tigard and then at Arthur Murray Dance Studio in Beaverton, winning a Rookie of the Year award and a Teacher of the Year award at Arthur Murray.  She became certified in both studios’ Syllabi.  While working in the studios, Michaëla discovered her love of teaching and so returned to the University of Oregon for graduate school.

In 2004 Michaëla completed her Masters in Middle/Secondary Education and since the Fall of 2004 Michaëla has been working as a full-time middle school Math and Science Teacher.  Wanting to put dancing back into her life, in February of 2005 Michaëla began "Dancing in the Rain," teaching dancing in the evenings and on the weekends.

Michaëla returned to the Portland area in 2006, where she has since been teaching 8th grade Science full-time in the Tigard-Tualatin school district.  Soon after she was excited to find the Sherwood Dance Academy where she has been able to continue teaching dancing.  Michaëla is happy to have found the Newberg Jazzercise facility to expand her teaching schedule.  She continues to train and is planning to certify in yet another Ballroom Dance syllabus soon.

“Dance is my passion, it is my love.  It is a privilege to teach dancing, I love watching dance transform and add joy to the lives of my students.” - Michaëla Chevalier
